Hack Your Routines to Health, Happiness and Financial Wellness

There are all sorts of routines you can implement to improve your productivity and your life — morning routines, weekend routines, workout routines, financial routines and family routines. But they’ll only work if you stay consistent. So what can you do to craft routines that you’ll actually stick with?

Designing an effective routine can take some trial and error, but you can enhance the power of yours by drilling down on the details:

Who do you want to assist you — or participate with you. Would you workout harder with a personal trainer? Do you want the kids to pick up their rooms while you tidy other parts of the house? Would it be helpful to review daily spending with your spouse? Routines need not be solitary. If having a buddy will help you stick to yours, perform it better or make it more fun, then by all means turn your routine into a duet.

What tools or resources can help you. Maybe you want to be in front of your computer to write in your gratitude journal or want to use free weights  for your exercise regimen. Having the right tools can make all the difference in the efficacy of a routine. If the fancy treadmill at the gym with the video display and programmable jogging routes makes working out more fun, by all means avail yourself of it.

When the best time of day/week is for your routine. Does your energy typically peak mid morning and bottom out by 3pm? Can you sequence activities so enjoyable tasks serve as a reward for completing less enjoyable ones? Could you use your commuting time or lunch break for a routine? Don’t make things harder by fighting fatigue or your schedule while trying to break in a new habit.

Where is most convenient or conducive location and setting. Do you need the seclusion of your basement? Does working in the living room offer too many potential distractions? If you need quiet  to concentrate, for example, you might want to go to the library to maintain your daily writing habit.

How you’ll perform your routine. Can you use music or an inspiring view to make them more engaging or enjoyable? Would a good chair make performing your tasks more comfortable? Remember, you get no bonus points for suffering through routines — so keep things as fun as possible!

Why it’s important or necessary that you perform this routine. What’s the relationship of these the routine to your vision for your ideal future? Connect your routine to your goals and values to remind yourself of the importance of sticking with it. Are you trying to lose weight so you’ll be around for your grandkids? Do you have a savings goal to send your children to college? Do you want to retire and travel with your wife? Reminding yourself of exactly what’s at stake when you do or don’t adhere to a routine can help keep you on track for success.
